A medical spa, or med spa, offers traditional spa treatments under the guidance of a medical doctor. That does not mean a doctor does every treatment, but it does mean that they offer more medically sound treatments than a traditional day spa. Patients may frequent a med spa for facials, anti-aging treatments, acne treatments, and fillers, among other services.
When to visit a med spa by treatment type
How often a patient will need to visit a med spa will depend on which treatment they receive. While it is not medically required that a patient return to a med spa, doing so will help them maintain treatment results. Below are some of the most common med spa treatments and recommendations for their maintenance.
Chemical peels
A professional skin care treatment, chemical peels remove the outer layers of the skin with a chemical solution. Chemical peels can correct acne scarring, remove sun and liver spots, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and tone the skin. The goal is a refreshed, younger-looking complexion.
For light chemical peels, which only target the outermost layer of the skin, patients should return to the med spa once a month or every other month. However, medium and deep chemical peels require less maintenance because they reach deeper into the skin. A patient may return every four or six months for a medium peel.
Acne facials
As their name suggests, acne facials may clear up mild inflammatory acne and comedones (blackheads and whiteheads). An esthetician achieves this through comedone extractions, which remove blackheads, whiteheads, and other blockages in the pores. Facials are beneficial and more effective in conjunction with other acne treatments and prevention, such as creams, cleansers, and prescription acne medications. Most patients must return to a med spa for multiple acne facials to see results. Typically, this means every week or every two weeks.
Botox®
Botox® treatment helps relax facial muscles that cause signs of aging. In particular, Botox may smooth out crow’s feet, marionette lines, forehead lines, 11 lines, and other dynamic wrinkles. However, touchups are needed to maintain results. Most patients will return to a med spa every three to four months for a Botox touchup.
Dermal fillers
Like Botox, dermal fillers are injected into the skin to smooth out aging signs. However, they volumize the skin rather than relax facial muscles. This makes fillers an effective option to smooth out static wrinkles and plump up the cheeks, under-eye hollows, chin, and lips. How often a patient will need to return to a med spa for a touchup will depend on the type of filler they receive. Some last only as long as Botox injections, while others may last years.
